The names of the U.S. military persons killed in Afghanistan, when a helicopter was shot down on August 6, 2011, have been released by the Pentagon.

It was the worst single-day casualty for Americans since the Afghanistan War began in 2001.  Of a total of 38 persons killed, 30 were Americans of which 17 were Navy SEALs and 8 were military personnel from Afghanistan.

Of the 17 Navy SEALs, 15 were from the top-secret unit that took out al Qaeda’s Osama bin Laden in Pakistan in May 2011.   Five of them were from conventional forces, three were Air Force air controllers, and five were Army helicopter crew members.
