Obama needs to ‘pull a Johnson’ for the good of the nation

America is in terrible shape.  We are at war.  We are discouraged with our politicians.  We are emotionally, mentally, and primarily financially broken.  There are few times during our lifetimes that we have been lower than this.  The times we have been broken, we felt the sense of repair due to our Commander in Chief.

As a nation, we have just been informed by the United States Department of Labor that for the first time in 66 years, there has been ‘zero’ employment growth and that the unemployment rate will remain at 9.1%.  Analysts say it could be a minimum of two years before anything can change given the over-spending of our nation in the past two-and-a-half years.  President Barack Obama’s policies at home regarding the economy have totally failed.  And Americans are hurting deeply due to his failed policies and miguided visions for this nation.

Americans know it.

President Barack Obama knows it.

However, if all Americans, including President Obama, don’t admit it, our nation can and will get worse.

Not only are Americans divided at this time, but so is Congress.  It wasn’t divided when President Obama took office, but after he spent a year-and-a-half in office, the midterm elections caused the divisiveness in the Congress.  The way President Barack Obama was taking the nation is what changed the electorates’ choices as office-holders.  The result is now a broken Congress on top of everything else that has been broken in the past two-and-a-half years.

America needs a full-time President – now.  Waiting until January 2013 should not be an option.  There is no more time for bus tours.  There is no more time for Martha’s Vineyard vacations with golf and trips to the beach.  There is no more time for Camp David weekend getaways.  There is no more time for White House and Rose Garden parties for the Hollywood elite.  There is simply no time or money for any of this wasteful, uncaring nonsense.

Take, for example, the honorable commitment for the nation’s betterment made by President Lyndon B. Johnson when the nation was divided and hurting over the Viet Nam War.  As much as he loved being a political servant to the people and loved being President of the United States, after the death of John F. Kennedy and one elected-term, Johnson told the nation:

With America’s sons in the fields far away, with America’s future under challenge right here at home, with our hopes and the world’s hopes for peace in the balance every day, I do not believe that I should devote an hour or a day of my time to any personal partisan causes or to any duties other than the awesome duties of this office–the Presidency of your country.

Accordingly, I shall not seek, and I will not accept, the nomination of my party for another term as your President.

A shocked nation could do nothing but accept his decision.  It was the only decision for a man who truly cared about his country and his people.  Things were terrible, and President Lyndon B. Johnson simply would not spend one second of his time campaigning or concerning anyone with ‘his’ future.  He cared enough about the United States to say he was going to do his job and not play partisan politics to get re-elected.  He needed to do his job.

Considering where our nation is today, President Barack Obama could best serve this country if he did the same.  In the interest of the nation, it’s time for President Barack Obama to announce that he will not seek another term as President because he has much too much to do to repair this broken country.  He could easily state the obvious which is that it would be uncaring, unforgiving, and selfishly self-serving to spend one more second campaigning when there is so much work he needs to do.

Like President Lyndon B. Johnson, President Barack Obama most certainly knows the nation can and will go on without him after one term – perhaps even go on better without him in the role of Commander in Chief for four more years.  If for no other reason than for his own legacy, President Barack Obama needs to get to work now and respectfully hand his job over to the next President of the United States, regardless of which party that President may represent.
